Northwest of Vietnam Bike Tour – 16 Days

Northwest of Vietnam Bike Tour .This cycling-journey is to the relatively unexplored northeast region of Vietnam, near the border with China where, until recently, you needed special permits to visit. Starting in Hanoi, we take to Lao Cai and from there we head east into the province of Lai Chau and you’ll be riding through dramatic landscapes and colorful ethnic minorities who are still living as they have for hundreds of years. It will be as if everyday you are riding through an open air museum – as you cycle by villagers weaving in their homes and blacksmiths forging their tools. We end our tour on a unique island in Halong Bay, so you can take advantage of the sandy beaches.

Day 1: Hanoi – Arrival

Upon arrival at NoiBai airport, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Free at leisure and overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 2 : Hanoi cycle to Yen Bai ( B ,L ,D )

Pick up at your hotel at 7: 00 and  transfer by vehicle to Trung Ha bridge and start cycling to Yen Bai along the banks of Red River .  Arrive late afternoon. Stay 1 night.

Day 3 : Yen Bai cycle to Sapa ( B ,L ,D )

After breakfast. A demanding, hilly, day along the mountain and river range culminating with the ascent of the spectacular , visiting the Vietnam & China border gate if time permitting.  Stay 2 nights.

Day 4 : Sapa Cycling to Ethnic Minorities  Village  ( B ) 

Start from your hotel at 8:30 Am , bikes to explore Sa Pa an old French hill-station, in a spectacular location close to the Chinese border. This morning we will cycling to Village , Lao Chai and Ta Van village ( Red Dzao and H’mong people ) . car pick you back to Sapa ,lunch and dinner by your self.

Day 5 : Sapa Cycle to Lai Chau  ( B ,L ,D )  

Retrace our route back over the Tram Ton pass to Binh Lu junction and follow the road 4D north west to Tam Duong and to Lai Chau .

Ride: 90 km on good quality asphalt road

 Day 6 : Lai Chau Cycle to Muong Lay ( Old Lai Chau ) ( B,L ,D )

Cycle to old Lai Chau via the Hang Tom suspension bridge, following the Nam Na through spectacular gorges and Black Dao villages.  A long day with some climbs.  Stay 1 night.

Distance: 110 km

Ride: 70 km on good quality asphalt road, transfer 40 km.

Meal: Breakfast , L = Lunch , D = dinner

 Day 7 : Muong Lay Cycle to Dien Bien Phu ( B, L , D )

Our  full day in Vietnam.  Cycle to Dien Bien Phu – 104 kms.  Dien Bien Phu was the scene of the historic French defeat in 1954.  Stay 1 night.

Distance: 150 km

Ride: 80 km on good quality asphalt road, transfer 70 km.

Meal: Breakfast , L = Lunch , D = dinner

 Day 8 : Dien Bien Phu Cycle to Son La ( B ,L ,D )

Cycle to Son La 150 km  , along the mountain and river range culminating with the ascent of the spectacular , visiting the Son La prison . O / N in Son La .

Distance: 150 km

Ride: 80 km on good quality asphalt road, transfer 70 km.

 Day 9: Son La – Mai Chau ( B , L , D ) 

Cycle to Mai Chau village around 120 km  , along the mountain range culminating , Arrival in Mai Chau village . Homestay in Thai house . O / N in Mai Chau .

Day 10 : Mai Chau – Cuc Phuong Park ( B, L, D) ( 160 km )

ransfer to Cho Lo market and start to pedal through the rich farming land of the Red River Delta and cycling through the breathtaking mountainous region and starting of Ho Chi Minh trails to Cuc Phuong national Park ( 90 km). On our journey there are some opportunities to see ethnic minority people, all friendly and welcoming. Overnight in Cuc Phuong National Park -Guest House .

Day 11 : Cuc Phuong – Ninh Binh ( B,L,D) ( 60Km )
Following breakfast , We start cycle from the gate of Cuc Phuong Park to recharge your energy for 10km cycling to the centre of the park. We will start again around 9am and make a couple of stops along the way to visit the Cave of Ancient Man. We continue cycle to Hoa Lu .We then start cycling to visit the two remaining temples of the ancient citadel of Hoa Lu. (12km), just passing scenes of local village life and rice paddies. At  midday enjoy a long lunch break near Hoa Luu . We continues with a 1 hour cycle to Tam Coc . O / N in Tam Coc Villiage.

Day 12 : Ninh Binh – Hai Phong – Halong (B,L,D ) ( 170km )
An early morning start to pedal through the rich farming land of the Red River Delta to Hai Phong. Stop at PhoMinh pagoda and Tran Temple in Nam Dinh. The journey is long but road conditions ameliorated will allow you have more time at every stops. Today is a long day visit farmers at work and local homes. We continue our journey to Ha Long Bay (80 km) by minbus . Views of sailing junks navigating past over 3,000 limestone islands and out crops jutting out of the clear and emerald water of the bay are nothing short of spectacular. Overnight in Ha Long.

Day 13 : Ha Long  cruise ( B,L )
Breakfast at hotel . Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam ‘s most impressive scenic sights. After a short transfer from the town, we embark on a cruise out to explore the world natural heritage dotted with some thousands of rock formations and visit Thien Cung and dau Go cave. Along the way we will anchor for a leisurely swim in a secluded cove and a seafood lunch on boat. Transfer to back hotel and all afternoon free for beach relaxing. .Overnight in Ha Long Bay .

Day 14 : Ha Long  – Hanoi  ( 30 km) ( B,L)
Breakfast at hotel . 7:00 Am Cycling  from hotel to Hai Duong Province, On the way we will turn right cycling along Duong river bank to  visit But Thap Pagoda  and Dong Ho paiting villages ,afternoon going back Hanoi we will have lunch at the local restaurant then take a bus back to Ha Noi and finish cycling trip . Overnight in Ha Noi.

Day 15. Hanoi city tour  ( B ,L  )

A day tour of Vietnam’s capital city, including Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum and traditional stilt house, the Ho Chi Minh Museum and the revered One-Pillar Pagoda. Pay visits to typical Vietnamese places of worship, the Quan Thanh Temple and Tran Quoc Pagoda, along the shore of West Lake. Just before lunch, tour Vietnam’s first university, the thousand-year-old Temple of Literature. In the afternoon visit the Ethnology Museum, and end the day at the beautiful Ngoc Son Temple on an island in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. climb into a traditional cyclo (pedicab) for a 60 minute tour of the colonial city’s traditional “36 streets of 36 wares” in the Old  Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake vicinity.. Free walking around Hanoi old quarter for shopping and short visit Dong Xuan market. Farewell dinner .

Day 16 : Ha Noi – Departure (B)
There is a free time to further explore Ha Noi. The tour ends after your transfer to Noi Bai Airport for departure.
